Abu Dhabi Airports upgrades its connectivity with an airport-wide fiber optic network

13 Nov 2017 , Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Abu Dhabi Airports has completed the installation of an airport wide fiber optic network (AWFON). The AWFON project was one of the biggest infrastructural projects to be undertaken by the company in the past year, with the aim of connecting the whole airport campus with a fully reliable and highly reliable backbone network.

The project entailed laying down 1,233 km of fiber cables underground to service Abu Dhabi Airports’ current and future needs in a flexible and reliable manner. The distance of cable used is close to a round trip between Abu Dhabi and Riyadh. Planning for this project started in March 2015 and the last man-hole was closed in earlier this year.

Acting Chief Executive Officer, Abdul Majeed Al Khoori, commented: “Delivering this project was key to Abu Dhabi Airports as it sets the base for efficient, high quality and high speed backbone network solutions adhering to best international standards. The delivery of this project was challenging due to its scope and complexity which involved multiple teams from several contractors, stakeholders and service providers. I would like to thank our technology project team and our partners for their dedication and close coordination that made this milestone achievable.”
